What 1,000 Pitcher Retests Taught Us About Gaining Velo

Driveline Baseball Guide 13 days ago

Description

We looked at over 1,000 pitcher retests to see what separated the guys who gained velocity from the guys who didn't. About 140 of them came in throwing 85, and within a year about 1 in 6 had hit 90. The guys who got there improved both physically and mechanically, and they held on to their strengths while they brought up their weaknesses.

From there Connor White, Driveline's Director of Pitching, walks through how to find what's actually holding you back: are you a better athlete or a better mover on the mound (expected velocity from force plates vs mocap velocity, plus grip and shoulder testing), are you a better thrower or a better pitcher (the pulldown vs mound gap), and how the time of year should change how game-like your velocity work looks.

Then he gets into what "good mechanics" means (phases graded in sequence, plus how efficiently you get velocity relative to stress), why drill work should change the constraints instead of adding cues, how fight-and-feed progressions work, and why you retest.

For pitchers, parents and coaches from high school to pro who want to throw harder and don't know where to start.
