Description
Apparently corporate LinkedIn has decided employees should now identify as chickens, fish, ants and even different types of sheep.
Yes, really.
One leadership post compares “chicken employees” who simply do their assigned job with “fish employees” who supposedly take ownership beyond their job description, treat company success like personal success and jump into problems whether they belong to them or not.
Another CEO compares employees to ants.
And then we arrive at the corporate masterpiece: the “herd mentality matrix,” where workers are separated into four different types of sheep depending on how well they fit into the herd.
Because apparently being called a sheep at work is career advice now.
In this video, we’re talking about workplace culture, employee engagement, corporate leadership, LinkedIn, management, going above and beyond, employee loyalty, herd mentality and the psychological language companies use to convince workers to act more invested in businesses they don’t actually own.
There’s nothing wrong with doing good work.
There’s nothing wrong with solving problems, helping coworkers, taking initiative or caring about the quality of what you do.
But there’s a major difference between doing your job well and treating a company’s success as your own personal success when you don’t own the company, control the company or necessarily participate in the upside.
You can be the perfect employee and still get laid off.
You can go above and beyond and still get passed over for a promotion.
You can take “ownership” of everything around you while having no actual ownership at all.
And somehow the solution is apparently to become a better fish, a better ant or a better sheep.
At some point, maybe we should just stop comparing grown adults to farm animals and talk about work like grown adults.
What do you think?
Are you a fish employee, chicken employee, ant, grazing sheep, lost sheep, black sheep, runt sheep — or are we done with this nonsense?
