I found a job posting paying $160,000–$180,000 a year that starts out like a normal chemical manufacturing position… and then turns into something completely different.
The role involves chemical production, manufacturing, research and development, equipment maintenance, quality control, bookkeeping, graphic design, website work, sales and eventually becoming a future COO and owner.
That would already be a lot.
But then the job posting starts talking about religion.
Applicants are expected to help establish and develop a religious organization called the Pilgrim Saints of Jehovah, participate in developing its doctrine, live according to its moral and ethical code, work six days a week, observe a Sabbath day of worship and have, acquire or establish a large family.
The position also offers housing and transportation.
So naturally I had some questions.
In this video, we go through the entire job posting, the religious requirements, the company connected to it, the address associated with the business, the promises of a $160K–$180K salary and eventual ownership, and the obvious employment-law questions raised when a job appears to mix secular work with mandatory religious participation.
There are legitimate religious organizations that employ people, and federal employment law contains specific exceptions for qualifying religious organizations.
But this posting appears to combine a chemical manufacturing job with explicit religious participation and lifestyle requirements, which makes the exact structure of the employer and role extremely important.
And that’s before we even get to the requirement about establishing a large family.
