CEOS WANT YOU TO WORK MORE FOR LESS!

Description

Apparently the ideal employee works harder, takes on more responsibility, negotiates less, accepts lower pay and stays grateful just to have a job.

A recruiter says a $200,000 employee was miserable while a $60,000 employee was grateful and “aligned.” Another executive tells workers they should be thankful to be employed, take on more responsibilities, work more hours, complain less and even offer to reduce their own salary when business gets slow.

Then a startup founder explains that some of their “best hires” didn’t negotiate at all — including one person who took a 30% pay cut and another who walked away from an offer paying $50,000 more.

Because apparently caring about salary means you aren’t committed enough to the mission.

In this video, we’re talking about salary negotiation, pay cuts, recruiters, CEOs, startup hiring, job offers, compensation, workplace culture and the increasingly common idea that employees should act like owners without actually receiving ownership.

There’s nothing wrong with caring about the mission, liking your coworkers or enjoying the work.

Ideally, you get all of it.
Good pay.
Good work.
Good people.
Flexibility.
Autonomy.

A company that treats you fairly.
But employees don’t own the company.
They can be laid off.
They can be fired.

They don’t control the business.
And they generally don’t participate in the upside the same way owners, executives or investors do.

So asking employees to take “full ownership,” work longer hours, reduce their salary, stop negotiating and become more invested in somebody else’s business raises a pretty obvious question:

What exactly are they getting in return?
And if negotiating compensation supposedly means a candidate isn’t “sold” on the company, shouldn’t the company also have to sell the job to the candidate?
What do you think?

Would you ever take a 30% pay cut for a company because you believed in the mission, team and work?
