COMPANIES WILL GIVE YOU ANYTHING EXCEPT A RAISE

Description

Companies will apparently do anything to show employee appreciation except give employees more money, more time off or more control over their lives.

After 44 years at Walmart? Flowers.
International Housekeeping Week? A workplace slumber party with beanbags and Netflix.
Employee Appreciation Day? Donuts.
Annual employee morale event? A trail mix buffet.

Customer Service Appreciation Week? Raffle tickets, Costco snacks and dress-up days.
And apparently taking a picture with a trash panda is employee appreciation now too.
In this video, we're looking at corporate employee appreciation, workplace culture, employee morale, HR, LinkedIn, raises, bonuses, employee recognition and some of the increasingly ridiculous ways companies try to convince workers they’re valued without providing anything particularly valuable.

There’s nothing wrong with giving employees food, having a barbecue or doing something fun at work.
The weird part is when companies turn a cheap morale event into a giant LinkedIn post about how deeply they value their people.

If everyone is already sitting around watching a movie instead of working, why not just give them the time off?

If you're spending money bringing in a donut truck, why not give people the money?
If employees supposedly make the entire company possible, why is the reward so often snacks, raffle tickets, patches, themed dress-up days and a photo for the corporate LinkedIn account?

A lot of employee appreciation seems less about actually improving employees’ lives and more about creating the feeling of appreciation as cheaply as possible.
And when every event needs a photo, a hashtag and a paragraph about the company culture, it starts looking a lot more like employer branding than employee recognition.
What do you think?

What’s the worst — or funniest — employee appreciation “reward” you’ve ever received?
