Apparently employee appreciation now means giving housekeeping workers a giant Scrub Daddy piñata and making them chase candy around a hotel parking lot.
No, really.
For Housekeeping Appreciation Week, management decided the “perfect way to celebrate” employees was a custom Scrub Daddy piñata filled with candy — while the whole thing was filmed and posted to LinkedIn as an example of team culture.
Because apparently raises, bonuses, better benefits, more time off or simply giving employees the money were not options.
In this video, we're talking about employee appreciation, housekeeping appreciation week, employee recognition, employee morale, workplace culture, corporate culture, LinkedIn, employee engagement and the increasingly ridiculous ways companies try to make workers feel valued without giving them anything particularly valuable.
There’s nothing wrong with having fun at work.
There’s nothing wrong with candy or a piñata.
The weird part is when grown employees are treated like children at a birthday party while management films it for social media and calls it employee appreciation.
And the LinkedIn comments might be even better.
Directors and managers call it “genius,” “awesome,” and something they want to copy at their own companies.
Why?
Because if a cheap bag of candy, a piñata and a LinkedIn post can create employee excitement and make people feel appreciated, that's considerably cheaper than increasing compensation.
The company gets employee-engagement content.
Management gets a LinkedIn post.
The employees get to chase Snickers across the concrete.
So where does employee appreciation end and corporate theater begin?
