A LOW SALARY IS A “BADGE OF HONOR” NOW?!

Description

Apparently a low salary is a “badge of honor” now.
According to some startup and recruiting advice, getting paid less proves you're willing to take risks, handle hardship and care about something more important than money.
Then the argument gets even stranger.

Job seekers are apparently getting rejected because they care too much about salary.
Asking about compensation too early supposedly makes you look like a “mercenary.”
Instead, you're supposed to demonstrate your worth, show genuine interest in the company culture and mission, prove what you can do for the business and wait until the employer is ready before talking about money.

Because apparently paid employment isn't supposed to be about getting paid.
In this video, we're looking at low salaries, startup culture, salary negotiation, recruiters, hiring managers, job interviews, compensation and the increasingly common argument that employees should care more about somebody else's company than their own paycheck.
Taking risks can absolutely make sense.

But there's a major difference between taking a financial risk on something you own and taking less money to build somebody else's company.

If you own the business, you participate directly in the upside.
If you're an employee, your salary is part of the agreement.

And asking what that salary is doesn't somehow make you less passionate, less committed or less qualified.

People can care about doing good work and still care about getting paid.
Those things can exist at the same time.
Companies care about revenue.
Investors care about returns.
Recruiters care about placements.
Hiring managers still expect their own paycheck.

So why does the employee suddenly have to pretend money isn't important?
And if an employer thinks compensation shouldn't matter, there's a very easy test:
Stop paying everyone and see who comes back Monday.
What do you think?

Would you take a significantly lower salary because a startup offered better “mission,” “culture,” “growth opportunities” or the possibility of future upside?

Or is a job still primarily an agreement where you exchange your time and work for money?
