Description
In February 1945, German submarine U-864 was trying to reach Japan on Operation Caesar, carrying advanced technology and strategic material through dangerous waters near Norway. HMS Venturer, commanded by Lieutenant James “Jimmy” Launders, was sent to intercept her before the mission could escape into open ocean. What followed became one of the most unusual submarine actions of World War II: one submerged submarine hunting another by sound, prediction, and a three-dimensional torpedo attack.
This documentary follows the intelligence warning, the silent hunt near Fedje, U-864’s mechanical problems, Launders’ difficult firing solution, and the sinking that ended Operation Caesar beneath the Norwegian Sea. It also examines the aftermath of the wreck, which later became an environmental concern because of its mercury cargo. HMS Venturer’s hunt for U-864 remains a story of stealth, patience, calculation, and the long cost left underwater after the war.
