Description
During World War II, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team was sent into the Vosges Mountains of France to rescue the Lost Battalion, an American unit surrounded and cut off by German forces. This documentary follows the Japanese American soldiers of the 442nd and the attached 100th Infantry Battalion as they fought through forests, ridges, exhaustion, and heavy resistance to reach the trapped men.
The rescue became one of the defining actions of the 442nd, but its meaning reaches beyond the battlefield. Many of these soldiers served while Japanese American families and communities faced incarceration, suspicion, and discrimination at home. Their mission in the Vosges became a story of extraordinary combat endurance and one of wartime America’s deepest contradictions: soldiers proving their loyalty in battle while their own country failed to fully trust them.
