In part three of the complete VoicingFlow 3 tutorial, we explore the Voicing Explorer and the Voicing Library—two powerful tools for discovering piano voicings for any harmonic context.
The piano contains trillions of possible note combinations. Even after limiting the search to playable and musically useful shapes, there are still approximately 1.5 billion voicings to explore. VoicingFlow lets you search this enormous “voicing universe” by defining the range, number of notes, hand distribution, voicing shape, chord tones, tensions, and harmonic requirements you want.
We’ll begin by using the Explorer to find a familiar four-note rootless C7 voicing. Then we’ll create more specialized searches, including two-hand quartal-style altered dominant voicings.
You’ll also learn the difference between the three search styles:
Best keeps the strongest candidates according to the Voicing Fit Report.
Balanced collects a wider variety of valid voicings.
Explore follows less predictable branches to uncover more unusual possibilities.
We’ll compare Fast Search and Deep Search, explain why a fast search may occasionally return no results, and show how deeper exploration can uncover hundreds of valid candidates that were missed during the initial search.
Finally, we’ll open the Voicing Library and explore curated collections of established jazz piano vocabulary, including voicings associated with Wynton Kelly and the complete voicing sets taught in mDecks courses. The library responds instantly to your harmonic palette settings, making it easy to search for stock voicings containing specific chord tones and tensions.
