What if the secret to better jazz improvisation isn't learning more chords, but learning to see the chords you already know in a completely different way?
In this jazz piano lesson, we'll explore a simple but powerful approach to improvising over seventh chords using familiar major and minor triads.
Instead of always thinking from the root of a chord, we'll train our brains to recognize new harmonic shapes. For example, when you see Gm7, you'll learn to immediately think D minor. This gives you the 5th, b7, and 9th of the chord without having to calculate individual chord tones or extensions.
We'll turn this concept into a practical improvisation workout using a jazz chord progression that includes major 7th, minor 7th, dominant 7th, minor 7 flat 5, and altered dominant chords.
You'll learn:
- How to use simple triads to improvise over seventh chords
- Why thinking from the fifth changes the way you see harmony
- How to handle minor ii–V progressions using two additional triad shapes
- How to practice these relationships until they become automatic
- How to transform these simple triads into richer, more sophisticated jazz sounds by adding the 9th
The goal isn't just to learn another jazz piano trick. It's to rewire the way you visualize harmony, so you can improvise more naturally and creatively without constantly thinking about individual chord tones.
Practice the progression, take it through all 12 keys, and start hearing familiar chords from a completely new perspective.
