Black Orpheus – Jazz Piano Lesson
How to Play from a Lead Sheet in 3 Steps
In this lesson, we use “Black Orpheus” to learn a practical 3-step approach for turning a lead sheet into a complete jazz piano arrangement.
Instead of trying to play everything at once, we break the process down into simple layers:
1. Learn the left-hand voicings and practice them with a backing track
2. Add the melody in the right hand
3. Split the harmony between both hands and add simple improvised melodic variations
We start with rootless left-hand voicings for the main progressions, including the minor ii–V–i in A minor, the ii–V–I in C major, and the ii–V–i in D minor. Then we look at how to use smooth voice-leading, when to shift register, and how to simplify line clichés like Dm to Dm/C or Am to Am/G.
Once the left hand feels comfortable, we add the melody and talk about one of the most important skills in jazz piano: keeping the accompaniment light. Instead of forcing a full bossa nova comping pattern under the melody, we use simple rhythmic fragments and leave space for the melody to breathe.
Finally, we create a more complete arrangement by splitting the harmonic layer between both hands. This lets the left hand use shell voicings in the lower register while the right hand combines melody, chord tones, and simple improvised variations.
