My electric scooter caught fire while charging, and the resulting damage was devastating. But what actually caused it?
After examining the remains, studying the battery configuration and spending countless hours investigating possible explanations, I developed a theory about what may have happened.
I believe a cell in one of the parallel groups may have failed or become disconnected after being subjected to excessive loads. This could have left its partner carrying far more current than intended, potentially setting off a chain of events that ended in catastrophic battery failure.
But there was something else troubling me.
**What happens when a lithium-ion cell's internal Current Interrupt Device (CID) opens in a high-voltage battery pack?**
And what happens if a battery charger is still connected?
I suspected that an electrical arc could occur inside the cell, potentially igniting flammable gases.
Then I discovered something fascinating.
**NASA had already investigated this very danger!**
Research by the NASA Engineering and Safety Center confirms that internal protective devices in lithium-ion cells do not always behave safely when used in high-voltage, multi-cell battery packs. Under certain conditions, the CID can arc, creating a serious fire hazard.
I didn't develop my theory from NASA's research. I developed it independently and only discovered their findings afterwards!
In this video, I explain what happened to my scooter and show the devastating aftermath, and walk through my theory in plain English.
⚠️ **THIS IS AN IMPORTANT WARNING**
If you build, modify, repair or use high-voltage lithium battery packs, please understand the limitations of the safety devices inside individual cells.
This is particularly relevant to electric scooters, e-bikes, DIY battery packs, electric vehicles and other equipment using series-connected lithium-ion cells.
**A safety device designed to protect an individual cell does not necessarily guarantee safety when that cell is part of a high-voltage battery pack.**
To be absolutely clear, my explanation of the specific cause of my scooter fire remains a theory, not a proven forensic conclusion. However, the wider electrical arcing hazard has been documented through NASA's research.
