The D-Day Medic Who Kept Saving Lives While Wounded in 1944

Walking Archive TV Video 20 days ago

Description

Waverly Woodson landed on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, as a World War II medic with the 320th Antiaircraft Barrage Balloon Battalion. Wounded before reaching shore, he still began treating injured soldiers during one of the most dangerous landings of D-Day. His story reveals both the courage of battlefield medics and the long delay in recognizing Black soldiers who served in a segregated American Army.

This documentary follows Woodson from the approach to Omaha Beach through the hours he spent treating wounded men under extreme conditions, even while he needed medical help himself. It also examines the decades-long struggle for recognition that followed his service. Woodson’s actions belonged to D-Day, but the honor took far longer to arrive — making his story not only one of World War II battlefield courage, but also of memory, recognition, and the history that nearly forgot him.
