Description
During the Second Anglo-Afghan War, Ayub Khan’s march from Herat turned the final phase of the conflict into a crisis near Kandahar. Brigadier General George Burrows and a British-Indian brigade were sent to intercept him before the Afghan advance reached the city. Near Maiwand in 1880, uncertain intelligence, unreliable local support, exposed ground, Afghan artillery, and mounting battlefield pressure turned that mission into one of the most serious British defeats of the war.
This documentary follows the Battle of Maiwand, the collapse of Burrows’s brigade, and the retreat that opened the road toward Kandahar. The battle forced a major British response and entered Afghan memory as a symbol of victory and resistance. It also treats the famous story of Malalai of Maiwand carefully, separating remembered legend from what can be stated with confidence.
