The truth is, none of us are ever going to limit ourselves to only five flies.
But exercises like this help you figure out what really matters when you're limited.
And when it comes to panfish...
I think it's all about having fun.
Simple flies.
Durable flies.
Quick flies to tie.
And flies that are just plain fun to fish.
Sometimes it's nice to stop overthinking things, grab a fly rod, and just enjoy catching fish.
