One Step Beyond – “Night of the Kill”:
“Night of the Kill” originally aired on October 20, 1959, and stars Fred Beir, Ann McCrea, Dennis Holmes, and John Marley.
When young Davey Morris disappears into the wilderness, his frantic parents organize a massive search to find him. After he is finally rescued, Davey insists that he was protected by a giant, gentle creature that carried him to safety. His unbelievable story is dismissed as the imagination of a frightened child—until enormous footprints and other unexplained evidence begin appearing around the family's home.
As fear spreads through the community, neighbors become convinced that a dangerous beast is hiding in the nearby forest. A determined hunting party sets out to destroy the mysterious creature, despite Davey's pleas that it has never harmed anyone. Torn between fear and compassion, the townspeople must decide whether to trust the frightened boy's account or their own growing panic.
Blending folklore with the supernatural, “Night of the Kill” is one of One Step Beyond's most memorable episodes, offering an early television interpretation of the Bigfoot legend while exploring themes of fear, misunderstanding, and humanity's tendency to destroy what it does not understand.
Released in 1961, Night Tide stars Dennis Hopper, Linda Lawson, Gavin Muir, and Luana Anders. Written and directed by Curtis Harrington, the film is regarded as one of the most atmospheric independent horror films of the early 1960s.
While on shore leave in Santa Monica, young sailor Johnny Drake (Dennis Hopper) falls in love with the mysterious Mora (Linda Lawson), a beautiful woman who performs as a mermaid in a carnival sideshow. Their romance soon takes a disturbing turn when Johnny learns that Mora believes she is not merely portraying a mythical creature—she is convinced she is a real siren, cursed to lure men to their deaths whenever the full moon rises.
As Johnny investigates the strange legends surrounding Mora, he encounters eerie fortune tellers, cryptic warnings, and unsettling stories about the mysterious disappearances of her former lovers. Unsure whether Mora is the victim of an ancient curse, a troubled mind, or a sinister manipulation by those around her, Johnny is drawn ever deeper into a haunting world where dreams, folklore, and reality begin to blur.
Filled with dreamlike imagery, haunting jazz music, and a melancholy seaside atmosphere, Night Tide is a unique blend of psychological suspense, dark fantasy, and supernatural horror. Rather than relying on shocks, the film builds an unsettling sense of mystery, leaving viewers to question whether the true monster is mythical—or entirely human.
