Description
One Step Beyond is titled “Brainwave” and originally aired on October 6, 1959.
Set during World War II, the episode follows a nervous and inexperienced hospital corpsman aboard a naval ship after the vessel’s captain is critically wounded during combat. With no surgeon available and time running out, the corpsman is forced to attempt a dangerous life-saving operation while receiving instructions over the radio from a doctor on another ship.
As the tense procedure unfolds, the young medic begins experiencing an unusual mental connection with the unseen surgeon guiding him. What starts as simple communication soon takes on a strange psychic quality, as instinct and unexplained intuition seem to direct his actions in the operating room. The episode combines wartime suspense with the supernatural themes of fate and unseen human connection that defined the series.
The Creature from the Haunted Sea:
Released in 1961 and directed by Roger Corman, the film stars Antony Carbone, Betsy Jones-Moreland, and Robert Towne.
The story follows a gang of American crooks who team up with Cuban revolutionaries to steal a cache of gold and escape by boat to the United States. To keep the thieves from turning on one another during the voyage, one of the criminals invents a terrifying legend about a sea monster lurking in the surrounding waters.
What begins as a clever scare tactic soon turns deadly when members of the group start disappearing for real. Panic spreads across the ship as the travelers begin to suspect that the mythical creature may actually exist. Mixing horror, satire, and absurd comedy, the film delivers a bizarre blend of beatnik humor, low-budget monster mayhem, and offbeat suspense as the mysterious creature closes in from the sea.
