Description
On the evening of 9 October 2026, 53-year-old Sidney Hill was reversing a Toyota Hilux out of his driveway on Lea Place in the Manors area of Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, with his two children when a white vehicle stopped behind them. The would-be carjackers exited the vehicle and immediately opened fire on the family.
Hill, who was seated with his daughter in the front passenger seat of the vehicle, shielded her with his body and returned fire, fatally wounding one suspect. When the first carjacker went down, the rest decided that the victim wasn't very good at being a victim and fled the scene.
Neither of Hill's two children were injured in the incident, but Hill sustained non-fatal injuries to his arm and leg which he has since recovered from.
On 25 October 2026, Pinetown detectives arrested a 35-year-old man in KwaDabeka in connection with the incident. He was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and 14 rounds of ammunition and faces charges of attempted carjacking, three counts of attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
