Border Patrol Stops Smuggling Boat Off Newport Beach

Description

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations intercepted a vessel south of Newport Beach, California, and took 14 people into custody before the boat could reach shore. A Long Beach Marine Unit crew aboard a Coastal Interceptor Vessel stopped the craft at about 1:30 p.m., then brought the boat and everyone aboard to the local U.S. Coast Guard dock.

The Department of Homeland Security said the group consisted of 11 adult men, two adult women, and one accompanied boy, all of whom identified themselves as Mexican nationals. One person was evaluated at the dock for possible dehydration and seasickness, found stable, and cleared by emergency medical personnel.

All 14 were turned over to U.S. Border Patrol for processing, and the vessel was seized.

The stop is the latest in a string of small-boat landings and interdictions around the city of Newport Beach. In September, surveillance video showed a panga docking inside Newport Harbor near Cypress Street, where at least a dozen people got off and scattered into the neighborhood, leaving the boat after it scraped a nearby yacht. Also last month, 37 people were rescued offshore after roughly two days without food, water, or fuel.
