Rural Thailand is beautiful. It is peaceful, quiet, warm, full of wildlife, family, culture and a completely different way of life.
But if you are thinking about moving here, especially if you are coming from the West and getting into a serious relationship, you need to understand something very important:
This is not a holiday.
Living in rural Thailand can change your sense of time, routine, family, purpose and even who you think you are. You may lose the structure you had back home. You may miss your family more than you expected. You may see things and hear things in Thai and Isan culture that you do not understand at first and you may see things and hear things in Thai and Isan culture that you do not like.
And if you come here expecting everyone to adapt to your Western way of thinking or you try to change things to suit yourself, you are going to struggle because you can never change Thai culture and you should never try to.
This video is not an attack on Thailand. I love living here. But this is a hard-hitting, honest look at the reality behind the dream.
Before anyone says it, I am not being depressive and I am not depressed, I am just speaking my mind to the western world in a way that can be understood. I walk around here with a smile wherever I go because I have never felt this happy to be alive.
My message is simple:
Accept it first. Understand it later. Then find the compromise.
I now know my reason for being here — it is to educate, to share the truth, and to help people understand what life in rural Thailand is really like.
