What Drives a Memory Champion to Climb Everest Three Times | Mountain Climbing 爬山 | Nelson Dellis

Beschrijving

Nelson Dellis has attempted Everest three times. Each climb was tied to a cause: raising awareness for Alzheimer's disease, the condition that took his grandmother and the inspiration behind his journey to become a six-time USA Memory Champion. He has also attempted the Matterhorn twice, turned back once when a rockslide hit mid-climb, and describes it not as a mountain but as a pile of unstable rocks. In Chinese, every single one of those climbs is the same two words: 爬山 (pá shān). 爬 (pá) is to crawl, the same character used for reptiles and babies, and 山 (shān) is mountain. From there, the characters 上 (shàng) and 下 (xià), up and down, build the entire vocabulary for getting on and off cars, planes, and mountains in one elegant, logical system.
