Description
Order white wine in China and the bottle that arrives is not made from grapes. 白酒 (白酒, bái jiǔ) is distilled liquor, the very hot kind, so always ask whether you mean grape or grain. 酒 (jiǔ) covers anything alcoholic. 红酒 (hóng jiǔ) is red wine. 黄酒 (huáng jiǔ) is yellow rice wine, never distilled. 威士忌 (wēi shì jì) is whisky, characters chosen for sound alone. And 白兰地 (bái lán dì) is brandy: white orchid ground, which has nothing to do with brandy.
