The best players earned promotions, private dining rooms, cars, and during the Communist era, better marriage prospects. In Chinese, basketball is 篮球 (篮球, lán qiú): 篮 is a bamboo basket, 球 is a ball, originally the word for round jade because jade was precious and round was auspicious. 足球 (zú qiú) is football: foot plus ball. 手球 (shǒu qiú) is handball: hand plus ball. 我疯篮球 (wǒ fēng lán qiú): I am crazy about basketball.
