She takes in elderly patients who have nowhere to go.
Over 30 years ago, Muji Sulaiman was working as an emergency department nurse when she began bringing home elderly patients who had been abandoned.
As she took in more people, she needed more space. In 2003, she moved them into an unused mosque, which she extensively renovated.
The 66-year-old has been running the Al-Ikhlas Old Folks Care and Treatment Home since then, looking after about 35 elderly Malaysians today. They receive daily care and take part in activities from karaoke to outings.
Malaysia is ageing fast — at a rate one and a half times faster than Japan did, according to its health minister. Muji wants to take in more elderly residents, but she cannot afford it.
“From what I can see, Malaysia isn’t ready to handle an ageing society,” she says.
