In Chinese, the word for trouble has a secret gentle side. 麻烦 (麻烦, má fán) sounds heavy in English: troublesome, annoying, frustrating. But 小麻烦 (xiǎo má fán) is what you call a cheeky child you actually adore. And 麻烦你 (má fán nǐ) is the polite way to ask anyone for anything, from picking up a pencil to borrowing a Ferrari. Jesse Edbrooke says the first dangerous phrase he learned was 不要烦我 (bú yào fán wǒ): don't bother me. He used it on everyone immediately.
