Spinoffs that became more popular than the original: (Persona is a spinoff of Shin Megami Tensei, Simpsons off Truman show, World of Warcraft, etc)
Starting off we have Persona which started off as a spinoff of Shin Megami Tensei in 1996. The series then exploded into a global JRPG powerhouse with Persona 3, 4, and 5 dropping the Shin Megami Tensei title altogether.
Up next is The Simpsons originally being a spinoff of The Tracey Ullman Show, airing as short animated comedy sketches in 1987. Upon getting its own sitcom in 1989, it became a record-shattering cultural institution.
World of Warcraft is a spinoff of the Warcraft series. This ended up playing as a natural evolution to the franchise that became one of the biggest games period, giving birth to the Mass Multiplayer Online genre.
Then there’s Minions from 2015 which is a spinoff of Despicable Me. Not only have these characters become more popular than Gru himself, their own movie grossed twice the amount of money. $1.15 Billion compared to $545 Million.
And finally we have Mario Kart, which is not only the most popular Mario spinoff series, but also holds the crown for best selling Mario game with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and its over 71 million copies sold.
