Powerups that Mario has stopped using

Starting off we have the P-Balloon that came from Super Mario World. With this he inflates himself to float across large albeit specific gaps. We haven’t seen it appear in the mainline since Mario 64 DS, though it made a brief comeback in Super Mario Maker 2 in 2019.

Up next is the Carrot from Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. This gives Mario bunny ears for slow-falling and gliding. This powerup has not appeared again since then with the exception of spinoff games as different purposes.

Next up is the Frog Suit from Super Mario Bros 3, this gave Mario frog-like attributes such as high jumping and fast swimming. This would largely be succeeded by the Penguin Suit in the New Super Mario Bros titles.

In Mario Galaxy, the Red Star was a one-off powerup gives Mario a 360-degree ‘Superman-style’ flight mechanic. Though it was only used for one Star and since went dormant for nearly 20 years.

And lastly we have the wing, metal and vanish caps from Super Mario 64. The three distinct cap power-ups granting temporary flight, heavy metal invulnerability, and intangibility. These have been succeeded by other powerups with similar abilities. Though Metal Mario does appear as a separate character in the spin-off titles.
