Shops looted as cost-of-living protests turn violent across German cities

Khaleej Times Short Today

Description

Thousands took to the streets in Frankfurt, Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg, protesting rising living costs, education funding cuts and compulsory military service.

Organised by the youth-led movement “Gen Z regelt” (Gen Z takes charge), the demonstrations were largely peaceful before violence broke out on Saturday night.

In Frankfurt, shops were looted, windows smashed and Molotov cocktails thrown at emergency workers, while police used water cannon to disperse protesters in several cities.

Authorities reported numerous arrests, with officials in Hesse claiming that around 100 suspected left-wing extremists had infiltrated the Frankfurt demonstration.

The unrest comes as similar youth-led protests spread across France, where more than 320,000 people demonstrated on Saturday.
