Description
Prime Minister Donald Tusk has vowed to press ahead with efforts to restore judicial independence following the suspension of the Constitutional Tribunal’s president.
But President Karol Nawrocki returned from a trip abroad to intervene, saying he helped the suspended court president enter the building.
Hundreds gathered for a second night of protests, with three people detained after clashes with police outside the court.
“Restoring the rule of law is our obligation,” Tusk said, while opposition critics described the government's actions as a “coup d’état.”
The dispute comes ahead of next year's parliamentary election, deepening divisions between Poland's pro-European government and national-conservative opposition.
