She Recovered From Depression by Changing What She Cooked | Kitchen 廚房 chú fáng | Rachel Kelly

Rachel Kelly suffered two major depressive episodes in her early thirties. Medication helped, but it was not enough. She spent five years with a nutritional therapist studying 150 scientific papers to find out whether what we eat could shift how we feel, and the result was The Happy Kitchen: Good Mood Food, a Sunday Times bestselling author's most personal project. In Chinese, the kitchen is 廚房 (chú fáng): 廚 is the space where cooking happens and 房 is room, so a kitchen is simply the cooking room. 廚師 (chú shī) is chef, the master of that room, and 下廚 (xià chú) is to cook, literally to go down into the cooking, to get your hands into it. Rachel points out that the book is not called the happy diet for a reason: it is the process of cooking itself, the slowing down, the smelling, the being present, that does as much for mental health as the food on the plate.
