Someone calls your Chinese 厲害 (厲害, lì hài): formidable. Your instinct is to say thank you. In China, that is the wrong move. The correct response is 哪裡哪裡 (nǎ lǐ nǎ lǐ): literally "where, where," a humble deflection that says you are not there yet.
