Pierce County voters weigh ending sheriff's term early, shifting office control to leaders

KOMO News Guide Yesterday

Description

Pierce County voters could end Sheriff Keith Swank’s term early and shift control of the office to county leaders under a proposed charter amendment on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Charter Amendment 53 would make the sheriff an appointed position.

The county executive would select the sheriff, though it would still require confirmation by the County Council. If approved, the change would take effect Jan. 1, removing Swank from the four-year term he won in 2024.
