Description

A restoration and remix of a 1978 Punked-up Peter Gabriel performance of the title track from the 1974 Genesis album “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway”. That album was Gabriel’s swan song as lead singer for the band.

This year has seen an upsurge in interest for The Lamb album, because of a high profile campaign for a new box set reissue containing remixed / remastered / bonus material.

Gabriel’s 1978 live shows were to promote his second album “Peter Gabriel” (AKA “Scratch”). The album was released in early June that year; the tour ran from July to December.

The musicians on the tour had all played on the album. Notably, absent on the tour was “Scratch” album producer and guitarist Robert Fripp, and pianist on-loan from the Bruce Springsteen band, Roy Bittan.

I’ve always loved the mid-70’s era of Genesis. Considering myself to be predominantly a Post-Punk type in the early-80’s, Genesis were my guilty pleasure! I caught them live several times back then, tho’ they were well past their prime, as far as I was concerned. In fact, seeing their early-80’s shows meant tolerating a lot of new songs that I pretty much hated, just to catch a few oldies.

However, I did see the one-off show in 1982, when Gabriel rejoined Genesis for a concert at the Milton Keynes Bowl playing a set of the 70’s material. It was an event to help pay off Gabriel’s debts accrued from his WOMAD festival that year. The show started with Gabriel being carried onstage in a coffin. Once the coffin was set down, he leapt out of it, and the band ripped into Back in N.Y.C., one of the best tracks from The Lamb Lies Down in Broadway album.

Incidentally, my first music video creation on this channel (ten years ago this coming January) was of a track from The Lamb album, Back in N.Y.C.

It seems very amateurish to me now, but has some quite good ideas, I think.

I’d love to create a new video for a Genesis track from that era, but a) there’s not much good footage in circulation and b) there are some highly-skilled fan-led Genesis video restorers already out there doing great work.

So instead, I thought I’d tackle this exciting Peter Gabriel live performance of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway that I love so much. It’s such a joy to see Gabriel in his New York Puerto Rican street punk “Rael” character, throwing himself around the stage. And all the while, the band are smashing out such a high-energy version of the track, subverting Mike Rutherford’s bass riff from the original Genesis version, into pure primal ecstatic rock n’ roll!

I wasn’t able to achieve exactly what I had intended with this restoration. On the visual side, remnants of interlacing on the original file are still noticeable. Also the audio separation (muchas gracias to Particledots for that) couldn’t comprehensively untangle the instruments from each other. And so a clean remix wasn’t possible. Also, there are some static-type sounds and distortion on the vocal that I couldn’t remove without losing valuable elements.

Still, it’s Punk Rock, so who cares, right?! In fact, “We started Punk Rock”, members of Genesis claim in a recent interview about The Lamb album reissue: https://youtu.be/qwwb8WkrdOM?si=6yMG_JDY-hi-_HNt
They are being ironic, but based on the evidence of this video, perhaps it’s the truth!

Thanks for watching, hope you dig it!
