A excerpt from David Bowie's appearance on the popular U.S. daytime TV show “Dinah!”, hosted by Dinah Shore.
It was near the start of Bowie's Station to Station tour, and he performed two live tracks with his new touring band, “Raw Moon”. In addition, he talked at length on the sofa, with Dinah, Henry “The Fonz” Winkler and other guests.
The show was recorded at CBS Television City in Fairfax, Los Angeles, on the 9th of February 1976, during Bowie’s run of LA shows at The Forum. The episode of the Dinah! show was broadcast a few weeks later, on the 3rd of March.
This is an illuminating and fun minute and a half exchange with Henry Winkler, on originality and the ability to absorb varied art forms and complex information, and be able to pass it on in a condensed and personalized way. The excerpt starts with quite a famous quote that has been incorrectly attributed for fifty years as being with Dinah Shore, since being published in the NME on the 7th of March 1976. In the article, the writer Lisa Robinson states:
“You’ve said,” Dinah continues, “that if you were an original thinker, you would not be in rock’n’roll.”
“Oh yes,” smiles David.
“But rock’n’roll has been very good to you,” she says.
“I’ve been good for rock’n’roll,” he says.

Anyway, as you see in this video, the exchange was in fact with Henry Winkler.
The quality is not great, but it’s a delight to see The Duke being the smartest and the funniest guy in the room!
