It is fifty years since the world premier of the movie, The Man Who Fell to Earth, on the 18th of March 1976. The film was directed by Nic Roeg and stars David Bowie and Candy Clark.
The premier was at the Leicester Square Theatre, in the heart of London’s West End. It was attended by its star, Candy Clark. David Bowie was absent, because he was on tour promoting the Station to Station album.
In this expanded excerpt from my 2017 documentary, David Bowie is The Man Who Fell to Earth, Candy Clark tells the story of how the the version of the film released in the U.S. release had been quite radically altered. The already challenging narrative, was rendered unintelligible, by editors instructed to reduce the films length, so as to make it supposedly “more suitable” for a U.S. audience.
As stated on the movie’s Wiki page:
"Charles Champlin of the Los Angeles Times described Bowie as "perfect casting" but thought the film was "a muddle," and suspected it was because he reviewed a version trimmed by 20 minutes for its U.S. run: "That would do a lot to explain why the movie proceeds from the provocatively cryptic to the merely incomprehensible."”
Candy Clark goes on to explain how many years later, she helped bring the original version onto U.S. screens for the first time.
