David Bowie’s Red Sails | The D.A.M Trilogy | Live at the Metropole | Berlin | 7 November 2025

Description

The D.A.M Trilogy is Carlos Alomar’s tribute project honoring his time as David Bowie’s guitarist and band leader in the latter half of the 1970’s.

Carlos has assembled a cast of musicians, including his former band mate, George Murray, to perform the iconic songs they helped create during Bowie’s “Berlin” era.

The band are currently touring Europe and the UK, to celebrate the “Berlin-era” art of David Bowie and his then-drummer, the legendary Dennis Davis, both of whom passed away in 2016.

The material you see on this video was recorded absolutely live on 7th of November, at the Metropole in Berlin; the debut show of The D.A.M Trilogy tour.

David Bowie’s fabulously absurd camp curio Red Sails, is a track from his 1979 album, Lodger. When asked about the song at the time, Bowie said, “Here we took a new German music feel and put it against the idea of a contemporary English mercenary-cum-swashbuckling Errol Flynn, and put him in the China Sea. We have a lovely cross-reference of cultures. I honestly don't know what it's about."

Musically, Red Sails, “borrows heavily”, let’s say, from electronic Krautrock band Harmonia’s song, Monza (Rauf und Runter), from their 1975 album Deluxe.

Adapted from the excellent Bowie blog, Pushing Ahead of the Dames:

Nothing quite prepares you for “Red Sails,” with its rambling trellises of disjunct vocal melodies, Bowie hitting (or missing) notes seemingly picked at random for him, with various squawks, mutters and Beatle shouts (the “oooh!s” after the third refrain) as background noise.

Structurally, “Red Sails” is nearly as random. While its three 8-bar G major verses are generally similar (though the third, “action boy seen living under neon,” develops into a new direction), they’re broken up by various guitar breaks and refrains.

Carlos Alomar, George Murray and Dennis Davis are, yet again, the last sane men in the room, with Davis, who dominates the fade-in, offering some Klaus Dinger-style fills.

The D.A.M Trilogy arrangement of Red Sails, miraculously reproduces the 1979 studio original. Tal Bergman nails the Motorik beat and insanely long drum rolls. Axel Tosca layers the track with lush long Eno-esque synth notes. Remarkably, the multitracked backing vocals of the original are replicated by Carlos Alomar and Lea Lorien. At about the one-minute mark, Kevin Armstrong leaps in with his interpretation of Adrian Belew’s berserk guitar solo. For the last minute of the track Kevin and Carlos have a guitar duel that reminds me of the Velvet Underground Live ‘69 album.

Cinematographer and film maker Bernd Pick was in Berlin documenting the rehearsals and preparations for the tour and the Berlin show. He is Director of Photography and principal cameraman for this video project.

Audio was captured 100% live [no overdubs] by tour sound engineer Ben Murray.

The track was mixed and mastered by producer Andi Reisner.

All the components have been hurriedly assembled into this edit by Nacho.

Thanks for watching, I hope you dig it!
