What does a scratchy metal detector tone mean, and why do some targets produce an iron grunt? In Mental Metal Academy Lesson 14, Scott explains clean, clipped, broken, mixed, and ferrous audio in practical language. You will learn why depth, target angle, nearby iron, discrimination, ground conditions, EMI, sensitivity, and coil control can change what a target sounds like.
The lesson includes a five-step questionable-tone check, a clock-face cross-sweep, an iron-falsing comparison, a Test Garden Time exercise, a same-coin audio lab, and an interactive mystery-signal challenge. The goal is not to identify every target without digging. It is to recognize repeatable patterns and combine tone with Target ID, target size, depth, pinpoint location, and site context.
Audio settings and terminology vary by detector. Follow your detector manual and compare known targets using the mode and tone setup you actually hunt with.
