Machines Learn Faster Than Humans. This Network Is Closing the Gap | Dissertation 論文 lùn wén | Richard Price
Richard Price built Academia.edu because he believes anyone with an internet connection should have access to the elite knowledge being generated by humanity, and one thought keeps him awake at night: machines now learn faster than humans, and once one machine figures something out, every other machine in the world learns it instantly. The only human network that comes close to that speed of knowledge transfer, he argues, is Academia.edu. In Chinese, a dissertation is 論文 (lùn wén): 論 (lùn) is to articulate or a theory, and 文 (wén) is literature, originally the image of a man with a painted or tattooed chest, the first record-keeper of civilisation before paper existed. 博士論文 (bó shì lùn wén) is a doctoral dissertation, 碩士論文 (shuò shì lùn wén) is a master's, and 寫論文 (xiě lùn wén) is to write one, the phrase Richard spent three years living inside.
