👩⚕️ While many believe that frequent self-examinations are a key tool for early detection, current evidence and recommendations from the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) suggest otherwise.
📈 Research has demonstrated that breast self-examinations lead to an increase in the number of radiographic studies ordered, such as diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds, because patients frequently report finding new lumps.
🩺 Furthermore, this practice increases the overall risk of patients undergoing invasive biopsies. Because these procedures carry potential complications and have not been proven to improve breast cancer mortality rates, routine breast self-examination is generally discouraged by major organizations like the USPSTF.
