► Cancer treatments, particularly certain chemotherapeutic agents, can unfortunately lead to infertility. Because of this risk, it is highly advisable to refer patients to a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist as soon as possible before starting their cancer treatment.
For breast cancer survivors and patients planning a family, there are several critical guidelines to keep in mind:
⚠️ Women attempting to conceive should ideally stop taking Tamoxifen one to two months prior to making any conception attempts.
⚠️ Alkylating chemotherapeutic agents, such as cyclophosphamide, are known to potentially cause ovarian insufficiency or complete ovarian failure.
⚠️ Despite the risks of ovarian insufficiency, breast cancer survivors must be aware that pregnancy is still possible during or after treatment.
⚠️ Because pregnancy remains possible, patients should be strongly advised to use non-hormonal methods of contraception to protect themselves.
⚠️ Effective non-hormonal options include barrier methods (like condoms and diaphragms), copper intrauterine devices (IUDs), or sterilization.
