While Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated epic The Odyssey is widely known as the first feature film shot entirely on 70mm IMAX film, there are several ways to experience the film in theaters, one of which is 70mm 5-perf film, and you can do that at SIFF Cinema Downtown.
With film reels up to 45 pounds that run at 112.5 feet-per-minute, they are "not for the light of heart," according to cinema technician and projectionist Aaron Ridenour.
He travels around servicing, setting up, and calibrating film and digital sound systems at theaters across the country.
He is SIFF's dedicated 70mm film projectionist for this limited film run of The Odyssey at SIFF. "This is one of only a handful of theaters in the country running The Odyssey on 70mm film," Ridenour says. "There are probably about 80 screens amongst the thousands that are in the U.S. running this 70mm film on 5-perf."
5-perf is the number of film perforations that are on each frame of the film. IMAX film has 15 perforations on each frame, with an aspect ratio of 1.43:1 - the 70mm 5-perf film has a wider 2.20:1 aspect ratio.
