Dick DeVenzio said it in STUFF Good Players Should Know: "When you have more players than they do, you don’t need a fancy play. You just need to give the ball to the player who is unguarded."
The best guards know their numbers before they get there. They ask three questions:
Who’s with me?
Who’s against me?
Who’s up next, the players behind me?
The first two tell you the numbers. The third tells you the pace. Speed up to keep an advantage, or slow down a hair to let a trailing teammate add to it.
Count before you commit.
