Converting a table mounted vice (vise) into an efficient pouch to band attachment rig.
The basic idea: two pieces of plywood with drilled and filed rectangular holes to hold spring-operated clamps are placed between the vice jaws, and are held in place by two sets of externally placed vice clamps.
The pouch and the ends of the rubber flat bands to be tied to the pouch are placed on the top surface of each wood block, with both held in place by the spring operated clamps inserted inside the slots of each wood block.
The vice jaws are then opened by turning the vice lever anti-clockwise: this increases the separation space between the wood blocks, and generates tension at the elastic flat band ends. Either the classic "wrap & tuck" method, or the wrap around and tying a knot method are used to connect the pouch and the flat band ends securely.
Once completed, the vice lever is rotated clockwise to release elastic flat band end tension, and the spring operated clamps are removed. Job done.
This process should work with most table-mounted vice units, with specific adaptations having to be made accordingly. Make sure that the wood blocks and their rectangular holes are smooth to avoid damaging flat bands.
The advantages of this simple process, which should also work for rubber tubes:
- full control of elastic tension;
- Precise placement of the band ends for "over-the-top (O.T.T.) or "through-the-forks" (T.T.F) band to pouch attachments, which influences slingshot shooting accuracy quite significantly;
- Fairly simple to set up with basic tools.
