Description
Joshua Wong, once the face of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison under the city’s national security law.
The 30-year-old activist pleaded guilty to colluding with foreign forces, with prosecutors accusing him of working with other campaigners to lobby for foreign sanctions against Beijing.
Wong has already spent six years behind bars and was due for release in January before receiving the latest sentence.
The ruling comes under the national security law introduced in 2020 following widespread pro-democracy protests.
Critics say the legislation has been used to silence dissent, while Hong Kong and Chinese authorities maintain it is necessary to protect national security and stability.
Wong, who began his activism as a teenager, was among the most prominent figures in Hong Kong’s democracy movement.
