Josh Edbrooke was in a taxi in Guangzhou in summer, boiling hot, squashed in with his bandmates and their instruments. He asked the driver in Chinese to turn on the air conditioning: 冷气 (冷气, lěng qì). She did. The car immediately stopped accelerating. The engine had no power left to move. They melted for another twenty minutes. 冷 is cold. 氣 is air. Cold air. That is all air conditioning is in Chinese, and Josh now knows exactly when to use it and when to think twice.
