Description
Beginning August 1, 2026, Colorado’s new SB25-003 changes how lawful buyers can purchase or transfer many semiautomatic firearms, including AR-15-style rifles. Buyers may be required to obtain eligibility through their county sheriff, pay state and local fees, complete approved firearms training, pass the required testing and have their completion verified before a dealer can proceed with the transaction.
But the biggest issue may be what happens from county to county. Colorado created one statewide criminal prohibition while allowing local sheriffs to control parts of the application process, processing fees, availability and the initial eligibility decision. That means the cost and difficulty of exercising the same Second Amendment right may depend on where a person lives.
In this video, we break down Colorado’s new semiautomatic firearm law, the county-by-county permission system, the role of Governor Jared Polis and the bill’s sponsors, the crime-rate justification behind the legislation and the constitutional questions this creates.
Is this really a firearms-safety requirement—or did Colorado create different versions of the Second Amendment depending on your county?
