Description
Trump’s ATF is proposing a major change to how qualifying firearm transfers could be completed — potentially allowing gun owners to complete the federal process without physically entering the FFL.
But there’s an unexpected twist: the National Shooting Sports Foundation is opposing the proposal, and an NSSF survey found 72% of its 624 respondents opposed it. Who are they though?
In this video, we break down exactly what the ATF is proposing, how remote identity verification would work, and what safeguards would remain in place — including Form 4473, NICS, live video verification, independent identity proofing, biometric/liveness checks, CLEO notification and the federal waiting period associated with these transactions.
But there’s another part of this debate that deserves attention.
ATF’s own economic analysis acknowledges that remote firearm transfers could increase competition between larger dealers and smaller local FFLs. And because participation in the proposed system would be voluntary, it raises an important question:
If a licensed FFL is comfortable with the safeguards and a lawful gun owner passes every required federal check, should that option be available?
We also discuss gun owners who could legitimately benefit from remote access — including rural residents, disabled Americans, elderly gun owners, caregivers and others who may have difficulty traveling to an FFL.
This is still a proposed ATF rule and is not currently in effect.
