Scent enrichment is one the FAVORITE activities of cheetahs. The sense of smell is powerful and triggers lots of behavioral, emotional and sexual behaviors in cheetahs and most all animals with enlarged olfactory system in the brain. Cheetahs don't have a great a sense of smell as other larger BIG cats like a tiger, but it's still good and better than ours.
I use scent enrichment to let Gabriel test the estrus levels of a pregnant cheetah as well as the scent of his WORST enemy, Logan The Cheetah. I was shocked when he ATE a piece of Logan's fur I presented to him. It was something Gabriel would not normally ever get a chance to sniff as they would rather FIGHT than 'sense' each other out.
My ultimate goal is to improve the population and rewild captive cheetahs and using scent enrichment is one way I will be doing that by having male cheetahs help determine which and when a female cheetah is in 'heat' or estrus. Cheetah males go CRAZY when they detect the hormonal estrus levels in female cheetah pee and excrement. It's designed that way!
