On November 29, 2023 director Penny Lane returned to The Sanctuary for Independent Media to present her documentary “Confessions of a Good Samaritan.” The film screening was preceded by a Be The Media! workshop "Positioning Yourself as Subject in Documentary Filmmaking" during which she discussed her process and the challenges of being the subject of a documentary. The film and followed by a question and answer session with the audience. "Confessions..." premiered at SXSW 2023, and follows Lane's experience deciding to become a “good Samaritan” by giving one of her kidneys to a stranger. This launches her on an unexpectedly funny, intimate, and provocative quest to understand why everyone seems to think she’s crazy.
A co-founder of The Sanctuary, Penny has been making award-winning, innovative nonfiction films for over a decade. This includes six features – most recently "Confessions of a Good Samaritan", premiering at SXSW 2023 – and over a dozen short films. A 2020 Guggenheim Fellow, Lane has also received grants and awards from the Sundance Film Festival, Cinereach, Creative Capital, Chicken & Egg Pictures, Tribeca Film Institute, Wexner Center for the Arts and many others. Penny has been honored with mid-career retrospectives at the Museum of the Moving Image, San Francisco DocFest, Open City Documentary Festival and Cinema Moderne. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. And yes, Penny Lane is her real name.
